“This interesting complex rich in history and art lies at the center of the vast plateau that creates the fraction of Montechiaro, in an area that is still intact in terms of landscape”. Italian superintendency of cultural artefacts.
The villa, probably built by Count Rodolfo Tortorelli towards the beginning of the seventeenth century, was to represent the achieved well-being of the family that had had in Antonio, a merchant, his forefather and first member of the house inscribed in the nobility of Bologna.
The acquisition of vast lands in Montechiaro prompted the Tortorelli family to organize the estate by building several farmhouses that still exist today and are located in the vicinity of Ca’ Palazzo Malvasia. The latter is in the midst of the estate, in an open position on the countryside, enjoying the beautiful panorama of the surrounding hills.
Far from the splendor of so many contemporary villas, the building was actually born as a “hunting manor”, a house of “good proportions” and dimensions for the time where the owner could spend the summer and at the same time follow his estate.
In 1636 the nobleman Francesco Ghisilardi Tortorelli, the last of his family, left heir to his entire fortune, including the property of Montechiaro, his nephew Conte Ercole Malvasia, son of his daughter Elena and Petronio Malvasia. As a condition of the inheritance he placed the obligation that Hercules added to his surname that of Tortorelli Ghisilardi.
The family acquired wealth and power, becoming the first Malvasia wine merchants for northern Italy.
The first part of the building to be built was the thirteen century medieval tower, characterized by an elegant eave-shaped frame, to peer into the Reno Valley and give alarms should invaders had arrived from the south. Today the tower hosts a beautiful suite.
The first land registry of the property (land registry Boncompagni) dates back to 1787 in which the villa is called "casino Tortorelli".
During the Second World War, the complex was partially damaged by bombings and occupied by the Nazis. In 1855 the manor was enlarged adding the porticos on the left wing.
As in the past, Ca ’Palazzo Malvasia is surrounded by a private estate, a small church and another villa. The property remains of the family that has decided to open the hunting manor, previously uninhabited for long periods of time, to the rest of the world.
In 1985 the property, together with its complex, was registered in the register of properties bound by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, which reports “The complex is integrated into a unitary morphology and cultural vision, of an architectural taste and a typical building tradition of the Bologna countryside ”.
